In an exclusive interview which aired Wednesday on NBC s Today Show, Brian Houston, the founder of the Hillsong Church, spoke about the recent scandals which have troubled the worldwide Christian church, including the firing of high-profile Pastor Carl Lentz for moral failures. I do think that we did allow a culture to develop where it was one rule for celebrities and a different rule for other people, Houston told Today.
But he also told program host Savannah Guthrie there s another side to it.

Hillsong Senior Pastor Brian Houston has issued a letter of apology for failings at the Church s East Coast campus in the US.
The apology was contained in an email to Hillsong members on Thursday, Religion News Service reports, and comes four months after the departure of its scandal-hit former pastor, Carl Lentz.
Lentz was sacked over moral failures and the once celebrity pastor later admitted to adultery. But his departure sparked a wave of accusations against the NYC church leadership, particularly around expenses and the treatment of celebrities. We know that Hillsong East Coast has failed to be the kind of church it should be. On behalf of the Global Board and as Global Senior Pastor, I accept responsibility for these failings and apologize unreservedly, Houston wrote this week.
Perth Pastors Chosen To Lead Hillsong NYC

Hillsong Church has named an Australian couple as the new lead pastors for its New York campus.
Chrishan and Danielle Jeyaratnam, who have been leading Hillsong Perth, will move to the US to take on the role.
The pair have been long time attendees of Hillsong, serving in a variety of roles and locations.
Hillsong Global senior pastor Brian Houston made the announcement in a video message, declaring the vision for the church going forward
Pastor Houston said it had been a rigorous process to select the new leaders after a tumultous past few years.

Houston was the subject of media reports he was handing over global control of the church, only for the man himself to deny the suggestion on Twitter. Hillsong Church’s Global Senior Pastor Brian Houston announced Sunday that Chrishan Jeyaratnam and his wife, Danielle, will replace Carl Lentz as leaders of Hillsong East Coast following the sex scandal that brought down the church’s former leader.
Calling them Hillsong Church’s “absolute finest,” the leader of the evangelical, international, multicampus megachurch made the announcement during Hillsong’s Vision Sunday service.
“Everybody knows, certainly most people would know, toward the end of last year, it’s been a very challenging season at Hillsong in the United States, in particular in the East Coast New York,” Houston began.
