CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A company that started at the University of Virginia is hoping to expand its impact.
Babylon Micro-Farms makes indoor growing aimed at providing more farm-fresh options for college students. It is now partnering with Harvest Table Culinary Group to bring fresh produce to more colleges.
“Self-contained vertical farms use hydroponics to grow plants with 90% less water. There are no pesticides or chemicals. We can grow plants 2-3 times more quickly,” Babylon Micro-Farms CEO Alexander Olesen said.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Some major updates are expected for Route 250 in the Pantops area of Albemarle County in the coming years. Designs for new turn lanes, a pedestrian cross walk, and signals are just getting underway as the county secured the nearly $9 million needed to fund the project.
“The reason we selected this project was because the corridor was identified as a high accident location,” Albemarle County Chief of Planning Kevin McDermott said.
Albemarle County secured $8.8 million for its first project that would start by replacing the existing traffic lights with ones that blink with a yellow left turn signal to give drivers more flexibility and ease congestion.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Pharmacies like CVS say some people in Virginia Department of Healthâs Phase 1b may be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine in the commonwealth, but not at one of their pharmacies.
However, CVS says it works with state and federal officials to set eligibility requirements, and is working with VDH to expand to all groups in Phase 1b.
An official with the health department says Virginia asked CVS to prioritize people on its wait list and those 65 and older, K-12 teachers and daycare and preschool workers.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - A scientist at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is developing a gene therapy that could help young girls across the country suffering from Rett syndrome.
Rett syndrome is caused by a mutation on the X chromosome. It affects brain development, which can lead to seizures and breathing problems.
Sanchita Bhatnagar is partnering with a scientist at the Center for Gene Therapy to bring about change for those living with Rett syndrome. They aim to manipulate cell regulators to only express healthy copies of certain proteins called microRNA’s.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Wawa will be making its Charlottesville-area debut in about two months.
There are currently two locations that will be ready to serve the public starting in mid-May according to a spokesperson: One will be along Route 29 North near the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport, and the other will be in Pantops.
