East valley schools: Graduation approaches Mary Perry It seemed a fitting time to reach back out to our student board members who authored the December and January articles and ask them about their plans for the future. All of the students are approaching graduation with a sense of excitement, ready to put the year of COVID-19 behind them and embrace college life. Below are the reflections of four of our student board members. Emma Svoboda shared in her original article that her dream was to play basketball at a Division I school. She is on her way! In December she told us, “I have been blessed to practice the sport that I love throughout all of this. I have a hoop in my driveway so you can catch me out there every night working on my game.” She heads to college out of state saying, “Following graduation, I have chosen to pursue my academic and athletic career at the University of Oklahoma. CalRTA, the California Retired Teachers Association, awards annual scholarships to provide financial support to Californian youth as they forge their futures. On April 15, CalRTA s local branch, Desert Roadrunner Division 43, announced the recipients of its 2021 scholarships in an online Zoom ceremony with mentors and parents present. Coach Jon Newland acknowledged that it had been a difficult year, especially for students in elementary, high school and up to college. There were many challenges this year for students and their families, he said. Looking over these applications, we would [like to] give the scholarships to every one of these 27 students they are all really worthy. We just don’t have that kind of funding. There are incredible stories of extra-curricular participation, stellar grades and a lot of these students work on top of everything. ....
