Sarasota Film Festival award winners announced
“Best Summer Ever,” a movie that puts a new spin on the teen musical genre, won the best narrative jury prize at the 2021 Sarasota Film Festival, which was presented at the CMX CinéBistro Siesta Key and online April 30-May 9.
The film by Michael Parks Randa and Lauren Smittelli featured eight original songs and a cast and crew made up of people with and without disabilities.
Eden Wurmfeld and Margaret Munzer Loe’s “Chasing Childhood” won the documentary feature jury prize. The jury award for best U.S. narrative short went to “Harana” by Marie Jamora. Said Hamich’s “The Departure” was named best international short, and David Baram’s “One All the Way” won the prize for best documentary short. ....

Sarasota Film Festival entry 'Dangerous Ladies' tracks FST Suffragist Project


Many of the events were canceled or drastically altered because of the coronavirus pandemic, but Alexander, who served as project director, said she was impressed with how the community “did come together and all the things we were able to do to honor the suffragists.”
The project, which launched with a walk in the Sarasota holiday parade in 2019 and continued through Aug. 20 anniversary, is recalled in the new 70-minute documentary “Dangerous Ladies: Voices of the Suffragists,” which is featured in this year’s Sarasota Film Festival. It will be shown in two public screenings at 2 p.m. Sunday and 6 p.m. May 6 at CMX CinéBistro Siesta Key. An outdoor discussion with the filmmakers will be at 8 p.m. May. The film also is available for viewing virtually throughout the festival, which runs Friday through May 8. ....
