In a statement, the Alliance of Health Workers (AHW) said they joined the protest to convey to the public the “concrete and true state” of the health workers as frontliners in the fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
“The increasing number of Covid-19 cases in the country is a reflection of the competence and inefficiency of the Duterte Government,” AHW national president Robert Mendoza said.
In sharp contrast to the biblical times, lives lost today were unholy sacrifices to the altar of greed, corruption (abuse of power), and injustices. These aren’t celebrated, but mourned. These aren’t lifted up to the skies, but buried with the heaviest burdens in our hearts.

Attacks vs. Laguna workers heighten days away from Labor Day

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna – Labor unions in the Southern Tagalog region’s industrial zones are being threatened by state forces, according to reports from progressive labor centers.
Labor alliance Alyansa ng Manggagawa sa Probinsya ng Laguna (ALMAPILA) reported at least four incidents of unions and unionists being harassed over the past week.
On April 23, police officers entered the premises of automotive parts company Daiwa Seiko in Biñan, Laguna in an attempt to conduct a “seminar.” Union officers boycotted the seminar despite being specifically invited to the seminar.

Published April 26, 2021 12:34pm The son of slain activist Jory Porquia on Monday urged Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra to let the inter-agency task force on extrajudicial killings handle the investigation. Porquia, a coordinator for Bayan Muna party-list, was killed on April 30, 2020 inside his rented home in Iloilo City by still unidentified suspects. His son Lean said that since Porquia was killed, they were never consulted nor approached by any police investigating team. “It seems that they don’t want to resolve the case, they seem to be uninterested in investigating who are the perpetrators and prosecuting the criminals,” Lean said.

Guevarra met with the families last Wednesday, April 21, at the Department of Justice (DOJ).
The families of some of those who died had requested a dialogue with Guevarra. Also present during the meeting was the wife of labor leader Dandy Miguel who was shot by a lone assailant in Calamba, Laguna last March 28.
The deaths of the nine activists and that of Miguel’s are now being investigated by the DOJ-led inter-agency committee on extra-judicial killings, enforced disappearances, torture and other grave violations of the right to life, liberty, and security of persons.
Guevarra said he assured the victims’ families that “all reasonable efforts shall be exerted to find out the truth” and asked them “to trust the integrity of the AO 35 mechanism and its capability to dispense justice.”
