Cortez Education and civil rights leaders from throughout San Diego County showed up at the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) to speak out against a local law firm which has been handling 90 percent of school district legal cases throughout San Diego County. The National Action Network’s San Diego chapter held a press conference on the SDCOE premises prior to Wednesday’s scheduled board meeting to raise its concerns with the law firm of Stutz, Artiano, Shinoff & Holtz, and specifically its senior partner, Daniel Shinoff. “Today, we will begin a strategy in dealing with the Shinoff Law Group and the SDCOE’s use of this law group,” stated the Reverend Shane Harris, President of the National Action Network’s San Diego chapter. ....
San Ysidro School District Has Spent $480K Trying to Recover $291K From Ex-Superintendent Ex San Ysidro superintendent Manuel Paul received $211,000 in severance pay when he resigned in 2013, after being indicted in a corruption case, as well as $80,000 in leave pay. If all goes well for the district, Paul will pay that back, plus damages and attorney fees. By Ashly McGlone, Voice of San Diego Manuel Paul San Ysidro School District is still trying to recover more than $291,000 from disgraced former superintendent Manuel Paul, and has racked up far more than that in legal bills trying to make it happen. The district has paid Long Beach law firm Leal-Trejo $480,000 as part of the lawsuit against Paul, filed in February 2015, according to figures provided to Voice of San Diego in response to a Public Records Act request. ....

Former Manhattan Beach Fire Department Chief Daryn Drum is appealing the city’s termination of his contract over his alleged use of insensitive language shortly after Black Lives Matters protests erupted nationally early last summer. The first appeal hearing, scheduled for December 3, was postponed when attorneys representing the city declined an Easy Reader request to observe the Zoom hearing. “This is an important issue,” said Dan Shinoff, the attorney representing Drum. “This is about freedom of the press and the public’s right to know what is going on. We are talking about tax dollars here.” ....
