“I was very close to my grandfather, so just to hear his name and that somebody found something of his and for it to be that as well, it’s just an amazing feeling,” Minkle said.
Porter, who died in 2018, was locally known as the “Thermometer Man” for his extensive collection and museum of thermometers, which got him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. Porter was also a science teacher and an Air Force Korean War veteran.
“For the guy John to go out of his way to find somebody to give it back to – with the world the way it is today, I’ll tell you it feels great to get a phone call like that from someone who is just trying to do the right thing,” Minkle said. “That meant a lot to the family.”
