Seats were filling up quickly inside the Roland E. Powell Convention Center in Ocean City, Maryland, on Saturday, January 18, 2020, for a public hearing on proposed design changes to the offshore Skipjack Wind Farm, which the Danish firm Ørsted hoped to have operational by 2022. The renewable energy project was greeted enthusiastically just a few years earlier when the Maryland Public Service Commission approved offshore energy credits for Ørsted to build 15 wind turbines in an area between 17 and 21 miles off the East Coast near Ocean City. At the time, the $720 million project promised to generate enough clean energy to power more than 35,000 homes and create approximately 1,400 jobs, mostly in Maryland.
