But while it marked a moment of sorrow, the death toll arrived amid a growing belief that America’s worst coronavirus days may be behind it.
“We are seeing the recovery from explosive spread over the holidays,” Tom Frieden, the former head of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, told
The Sydney Morning Herald and
The Age.
“It’s encouraging to see cases really plummeting, and with that we’re seeing a plummeting in hospitalisations and eventually in deaths.”
The US is now recording around 60,000 new cases a day, significantly down from a peak of 280,000 in early January. The seven-day rolling average is at its lowest since the start of the northern winter wave in October. ....

Covid-19: Hope pandemic waning in US as nation mourns 500,000 dead

With the White House flags flying at half-mast in the US, President Joe Biden addressed the nation on Tuesday (NZT) to mark what he described as a “truly grim, heartbreaking milestone”: a half-million Americans dead from the coronavirus.
“We have to resist becoming numb to the sorrow,” Biden said, before attending a candle-lit vigil and participating in a minute’s silence. “We have to resist viewing each life as a statistic or a blur or on the news.”
The 500,000 figure, Biden noted, exceeded the American casualties from World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War combined. He could also have noted that the country’s coronavirus death count was as if the population of a city like New Orleans had been wiped off the map. ....

Washington: When Alston Green thinks about America’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, he feels a sense of shame. The US has already recorded more than 280,000 deaths and continues to set new records for daily cases, deaths and hospitalisations.
Johns Hopkins University reported that 3124 Americans died from COVID-19 on Wednesday, topping 3000 for the first time.
I have been very disconcerted at how many Americans are so selfish and only thinking of their own personal interest,” says Green, a retired graphic designer who lives in New York City.
Alston Green, of New York, says he is taking a wait and see approach to a COVID-19 vaccine. ....
