CDPH talks vaccination obstacles in light of new COVID-19 guidelines

As COVID-19 vaccine eligibility expands to 12- to 15-year olds and vaccination rates fall, Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Allison Arwady discussed Chicago’s obstacles and initiatives to vaccinate the remaining population at a press conference Wednesday.
Currently, Illinois has entered a “bridge phase” as the state looks to reopen entirely in the coming months. In Chicago, Mayor Lori Lightfoot anticipated a full reopening by July 4.
On misinformation and immunity
Arwady said one of the primary reasons remaining residents are not getting vaccinated is that they don’t believe they’re at risk for COVID-19.
Some residents who contracted COVID-19 are also refusing to get the vaccine, Arwady said, and are relying on natural immunity for protection against future infection. She said there are some false claims surrounding vaccine side effects, which are rooted in misinformation circulating online. ....

Local vaccination sites to offer Pfizer vaccines for children 12 and older

Several Cook County and Chicago mass vaccination sites will offer Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines for children ages 12-15 starting on Thursday, a change from the country’s previous 16+ age requirement for the Pfizer vaccine.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended the administration of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines to 12- to 15-year-olds Wednesday afternoon.  Earlier this week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the emergency use of the Pfizer vaccine for this age group following a human clinical trial, multiple evaluations from physicians and scientists and a final approval from FDA staff.
“Like adults, all youth age(d) 12 and older are encouraged to get the vaccine,”  Chicago Department of Public Health commissioner Allison Arwady said in a Chicago news release. “Current data show that the vaccine is safe and effective in children, and it not only protects our kids, but also their families and our communities.” ....

Chicago health experts answer COVID-19 questions on vaccines, immunity

What should I do after getting vaccinated?
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an individual is fully vaccinated after two weeks of receiving a second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech shots or a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) shot.
After reaching this status, the CDC says individuals can gather indoors without masks with other fully vaccinated individuals.
If a fully vaccinated individual is exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19, they do not need to get tested or self-quarantine unless they are showing symptoms. Exceptions apply if the individual lives in a group setting. ....
