With 99 days to go until the midterm general elections, U.S. Rep. Val Demings met with Haitian-American leaders in North Miami on Monday, invoking former President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign and touting her money lead over her Republican opponent, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio.
Extraordinary images show at least 150 men, women and young children crowded on the boat with no floor place to move on the wooden vessel, which had run aground near Boca Chita Key.
News of the disaster drew a new wave of shock and grief in Haitian enclaves across the United States, home to the largest share of the Caribbean nation’s diaspora.
