Last summer’s reckoning over police brutality against Black people, led both Fresno and Bakersfield to establish commissions of community members, charged with making recommendations for reform.  Valley Edition Host Kathleen Schock checked in with some of the activists involved to see how the work is going, and to hear their response to the murder conviction of Derek Chauvin. She spoke with Bakersfield activists NaTesha Johnson and Arleana Waller, along with D’Aungillique Jackson, president of the Fresno State chapter of the NAACP, and Fresno-based anti-gun violence advocate Aaron Foster.

Fresno Names Police Reform Board to Implement Policy Changes

Last year, a special committee recommended 73 ways to reform the Fresno Police Department in the wake of local and national protests over law enforcement practices.
Now, a new 8-member board will help carry out those suggestions.
The original reform committee, created last year after the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police, met for four months crafting proposed changes to Fresno PD policies and systems.
Among the top recommendations were establishing an oversight board, strengthening the existing Fresno Office of Independent Review and making changes to the way local police respond to mental and behavioral health related calls for service. ....

Fresno State students elect D'Aungillique Jackson as next ASI president

D’Aungillique Jackson, president of the Fresno State NAACP chapter, was announced as the next ASI president following the conclusion of the 2021-2022 Associated Students Inc. (ASI) election.
Jackson won the position of ASI president with a 192-vote margin winning the seat from candidates Isabella O’Keeffe, Nicholas Moore and Steven Hensley.
Jackson received 535 votes, O’Keeffe received 275, Moore received 343 and Hensley received 121. There were six write-in candidates and 26 abstaining votes.
Jackson celebrated their victory over social media posts thanking her supporters and displaying enthusiasm for the upcoming semester.
