View Comments Wayne County s chief circuit judge ruled Thursday that Taylor Mayor Rick Sollars isn t eligible to appear on the Aug. 3 ballot because of his failure to file several campaign finance reports and pay fines prior to filing for reelection. Chief Judge Timothy Kenny sided with the earlier findings of Taylor City Clerk Cynthia Bower, agreeing she made the right call last month when she declared that Sollars, who is under federal indictment, is ineligible. Kenny also dissolved a temporary restraining order he issued earlier this month that forced Taylor s Election Commission to certify Sollars for the ballot until he could hold a hearing. ....
Wayne County clerk backtracks on Duggan eligibility for ballot Detroit The Wayne County clerk on Tuesday walked back her finding from a day earlier that Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan had missing campaign finance documents with her office, saying the filings are in order in a move that would allow the city clerk to clear him for the ballot. Cathy Garrett cited a miscommunication in a statement late Tuesday and said she s found that Duggan s campaign finance documents were in order by the filing deadline for the August primary. A legal challenge was filed Monday arguing he was ineligibile for the ballot. ....
Taylor Indicted Mayor Rick Sollars is ineligible to appear on the August primary ballot over his failure to file campaign finance reports and pay thousands of dollars in late fees, a city official ruled late Friday. Taylor City Clerk Cynthia Bower told The Detroit News on Saturday that she made the difficult ruling late Friday after carefully investigating a challenge to Sollars candidacy submitted by a City Council hopeful earlier in the week. I must protect the integrity of the election, that is No. 1, Bower said. It s a difficult decision to make, but I had no choice but to not certify his candidacy.
