A tropical cyclone has developed in the Arabian Sea and is expected to intensify and could become one of the strongest to threaten parts of western India and eastern Pakistan in more than two decades.
Tropical Cyclone Tauktae (pronounced TAW-te) continues to organize in the southeastern Arabian Sea, a couple of hundred miles west of southern India s Kerala coast.
Given an ample supply of warm – about 88 degrees Fahrenheit – deep ocean water, humid air and low wind shear, Tauktae could rapidly intensify into the equivalent of a formidable hurricane this weekend. ....

Tropical Cyclone Tauktae (pronounced TAU-te) made landfall in India with torrential rain, damaging winds and coastal flooding.
Tauktae s center moved ashore just before midnight local time, May 17 in western India s Gujarat state between Porbanadar and Mahuva, about 150 miles northwest of Mumbai.
According to the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Tauktae was the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane at landfall, with maximum sustained winds estimated at 125 mph.
This tied Tauktae with a May 1999 cyclone for the strongest cyclone by estimated wind speed to landfall in Gujarat, according to NOAA s database. A June 1998 cyclone which claimed an estimated 1,320 lives was the only other Category 3 Gujarat landfall in modern-era records dating to the 1970s. ....

The hidden life of Somalia’s Christians
In Somalia’s complex context, a very small Christian community continues to live notwithstanding the various difficulties and challenges.
Agenzia Fides – Mogadishu, Somalia
For thirty years Somalia has been a divided country, without stable institutions, crossed by fundamentalist turmoil. In this complex context, a very small Christian community continues to live which, amidst a thousand difficulties, continues to move forward with its faith. It is led by Bishop Giorgio Bertin, a life dedicated to Somalia first as a Franciscan missionary, then as Bishop of Djibouti and Apostolic Administrator of Mogadishu.

The Bishop is well aware of both the conditions in which Christians live and the political and economic situation of the country of the Horn of Africa. The Somali Catholic community is very small: in the entire country there are just a few dozen who secretly profess Christianity. Nevertheless, among mem ....

Somalia continued to face multiple threats, including the COVID-19 pand emic,
Desert Locusts and poor rains from the Deyr season. In the north of the country, the situation was further aggravated by unprecedented rainfall and strong-winds from Cyclone Gati in November, which caused flash floods resulting in crop, livestock and property losses, particularly in Iskushuban district of Bari region. Approximately 120,000 people were affected, including the displacement of around 42,100 people.
Food insecurity is expected to worsen in 2021 across Somalia, driven by the effects of localized floods, below-average rainfall and a worsening Desert Locust infestation. In the absence of humanitarian assistance, over 2.7 million people are expected to face crisis or emergency levels of food insecurity by mid-2021, according to the findings of the 2020 post-Deyr seasonal food security and nutrition assessment.
