Keep up with the fast pace of orders. Now. Californias new 20 minimum wage aims to help those workers keep up with the states rising cost of living. A vast majority are adults. About a quarter have children of their own, and the pay is so low right now that one half of all fast food workers in the state either themselves or have a Family Member whos relying on one of our social safety net programs. Ken jacobs is cochair of uc berkeleys labor center. He says the new law applies to some half a million employees at chains with more than 60 stores. It creates a new Fast Food Council as well, made up of industry and unions to address future wages and working conditions. Some major chains including mcdonalds, chipotle, starbucks, jack in the box and shake shack say they will have to increase prices. We have soft sales. We have declining traffic counts.
