On Wednesday, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich unveiled the county’s Climate Action Plan.
At the Marian Fryer Town Plaza in Downtown Wheaton, Elrich said the county’s climate goals aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by 80% by 2027 and 100% by 2035 compared to 2005 levels.
“They are among the most ambitious in the world,” Elrich said.
The plan outlines 86 climate actions and the county expects to act on 75 in the fiscal year 2022. Recommendations focus on reducing emissions in energy, buildings and transportation, reducing climate risk and centering racial equity, among other recommendations.
Elrich said it will take all county residents to make the plan successful. He said Montgomery County should treat the climate crisis with the same level of urgency as the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Biden will announce Thursday that the United States intends to cut planet-warming emissions nearly in half by the end of the decade, a target that would require Americans to transform the way they drive, heat their homes and manufacture goods.
The target, confirmed by three people briefed on the plan, is timed to a closely watched global summit meeting that Mr. Biden is hosting Thursday and Friday, which is aimed at sending a message that the United States is rejoining international efforts to fight global warming after four years of climate denial from the Trump administration.
