Italo Ferreira and Carissa Moore have taken out the 2021 Rip Curl Newcastle Cup at Merewether, New South Wales, Australia.
The second event on World Surf League (WSL) 2021 Championship Tour (CT) - the first was the 2020 Billabong Pipe Masters - wrapped up in solid three-to-five foot waves.
It was also the first time in nearly 30 years that surfers competed in an elite level competition in Newcastle.
In a very tight all-Brazilian men s final, Ferreira defeated Gabriel Medina with long and wide left and right-hand waves peeling fast down the line.
All the best waves were ridden in the first half of the decisive heat, but it was Italo s signature air reverse on a closeout section that won him the trophy. ....

Thousands of sports fans will descend on Newcastle this weekend as the city plays host to two major national events, offering a taste of what is to come during an action-packed April.
The harbour will become a hive of activity from Saturday when the Sailing Champions League Asia Pacific brings its qualifying regatta to Newcastle for the first time, with some of the country’s best sailors battling it out over two days of fast-paced action on the water.
Football fans in their thousands will converge on Newcastle when McDonald Jones Stadium hosts a historic A-league double-header on Sunday, with Wellington Phoenix clashing with Brisbane Roar before hometown heroes the Newcastle Jets take to the pitch against heavyweights Adelaide United. ....

Today, the World Surf League (WSL) and Rip Curl together announced the three-year partnership of the 
Rip Curl WSL Finals, the new one-day competition that will decide the men’s and women’s World Surfing Champions.
The inaugural Rip Curl WSL Finals will take place in San Clemente, Calif. at Lower Trestles. At the conclusion of the regular season, the top five men and top five women on the Championship Tour (CT) rankings will head to Orange County for this one-day, winner-take-all shot at the World Title.
Often referred to as one of the most high-performance waves in the world, there is nowhere to hide at Lowers. To win there requires a unique combination of technical mastery and explosive innovation. Today, the World Surf League (WSL) confirmed the updated schedule for the Championship Tour (CT) Australian leg, announcing the three upcoming events in North Narrabeen (NSW), Margaret River (WA), and Rottnest Island (WA).
