By Carla Slavey Commonwealth Journal Jun 4, 2021 Attica Scott One of Somersetâs major downtown projects received attention from a prominent state leader Friday â and not in a positive way. A lot of focus and attention has been given to the proposed University of Somerset over the past few months. Somersetâs mayor, Alan Keck, has been front and center in the public relations and fundraising efforts for the four-year university that is set to go into the former Cundiff Square. But the project has had its share of controversy, mostly surrounding the circumstances in which the former residents of the Cundiff Squareâs townhouses were forced to move from their homes in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. ....

The Virginia will be completely renovated and converted into a live performance venue. Somerset firm DECO Architects developed renderings for the building and bidding on the project will begin immediately. The city will own and maintain the facility, which will feature live music and theater and be available for rent as a community event space. Mayor Alan Keck said he anticipates the facility will open in 2022, just in time for the 100th anniversary of the building. ....
