Cumbria GeoConservation group s horror at Popping Stone damage

In early April, it was reported the Popping Stone, Gilsland, had been moved after, allegedly, being bulldozed. The Popping Stone is a group of three rounded, sandstone boulders on the Irthing Gorge. At the start of the month, caterpillar tracks were reported along the footpath to the site, while the stones themselves had, allegedly, been pushed toward the river and turned over. The surrounding ground had also, reportedly, been disturbed. Now, Cumbria GeoConservation Group has spoken out on the issue. In a letter, the group said: “We wish to record our horror and disapproval at the damage recently incurred on one of our Local Geological Sites (LGS), namely the disturbance to the Popping Stones.
