Calls for development of old Harraby Community Centre in Carlisle after suspected arson attack

Residents in Carlisle were shocked to wake up to the news that a well-loved community centre had been gutted by fire. Fire crews from Carlisle East and West fire stations arrived at the scene of the old Harraby Community Centre on Edgehill Road at 2am yesterday. Fire crews said the blaze appeared to have been started deliberately and that Cumbria Police are now investigating. Carole Jerram, who lives near Edgehill Road, said: “I was taking my little dog on a morning walk and I noticed the debris and I could smell it. “It’s an empty building now and I don’t know what they’re going to do with it.

Long read: Latest twist in battle over Cumbria coal mine

RUNNING BATTLE: The proposed Woodhouse Colliery in west Cumbria will be the subject of a public inquiry The political fallout is continuing in Cumbria following the latest twist in the ongoing battle over plans to bring back coal mining to the county. Late on Thursday, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government published a letter that it had sent to Cumbria County Council, informing the authority the Secretary of State for Local Government, Robert Jenrick, had called in the controversial planning application for the construction of a coking coal mine just outside Whitehaven. This means that Mr Jenrick will now make the decision on whether or not to approve the proposals, rather than Cumbria County Council.

Times & Star letters: Covid restrictions are painful – but worth it in the end

IN early December you kindly published my letter on Covid-19 precautions and my message to the Government then was: “Don’t stop now!” As we understand Boris Johnson is about to announce the plans for the relaxation of lockdown on Monday, my message is still “don’t stop now” – or at least “only take the brakes off slowly”. The Prime Minister has said himself that he wants this to be the last lockdown. To achieve this we should be aiming for a Covid zero, or nearly zero, policy. Other countries such as Australia, New Zealand and South Korea have achieved this and not only have their Covid-19 statistics (including the tragic toll of deaths) been much better than ours but they have been able to at least partially reopen their economies.
