Volunteers kept track of 14 bald eagle nests in Sussex County in 2020, including three previously unknown and two that are newly active, says the Division of Fish and Wildlife s 2020 Bald Eagle Survey report.
Because of its numerous lakes, streams and state and national parks, the county has room for the large raptors to search for food.
The report lists 14 identified eagle nests for last year. Three sites are listed as new, and two where there had been nesting in the past but none last year.
Bald eagles, which mature at about 5 years old, mate for life. However, if a mate dies, the surviving eagle will find a new mate and may use a previous nest of either of the pair.
