On the hunt for new exoplanets A state-of-the-art instrument called NEID, from the Tohono O’odham word meaning ‘to see,’ has officially started its scientific mission: discovering new planets outside of the solar system. The NEID fiber feed mounted on the WIYN telescope obtained during commissioning of the instrument. This state-of-the-art spectrometer has officially started its scientific mission of discovering new exoplanets. (Image: NSF’s National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory/KPNO/NSF/AURA) A powerful new tool for discovering planets outside of the solar system has officially started its scientific mission. NEID is a state-of-the-art spectrometer that collected its preliminary “first light” in early 2020 and now, after some delays due to the pandemic, is fully operational. ....
Giant comet found in outer solar system The discovery of the comet estimated to 100-200 kilometers across was made by Penn researchers following a comprehensive search of data from the Dark Energy Survey. Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein is the most distant comet ever discovered and possibly the largest seen in modern times. Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein (circled) is estimated to be about 1000 times more massive than a typical comet, making it arguably the largest comet discovered in modern times. It was discovered using images for the Dark Energy Survey (DES) by the 570-megapixel Dark Energy Camera (DECam) at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. These images show the comet in October 2017, when it was 25 au away, 83% of the distance to Neptune. (Image: Dark Energy Survey/DOE/FNAL/DECam/CTIO/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/P. Bernardinelli & G. A rare celestial treat on the winter solstice Four tips and takeaways from astronomer Cullen Blake on the upcoming alignment of Jupiter and Saturn and how to best catch a glimpse of the ‘great conjunction.’ Saturn (top) and Jupiter visible just after sunset at Shenandoah National Park on December 13th. On the winter solstice, December 21st, the two gas giants will appear a tenth of a degree apart from one another. (Image: NASA/Bill Ingalls) During the past several weeks, Jupiter and Saturn’s orbits have been slowly approaching one another in the early evening sky. On the night of the winter solstice, the two gas giants will appear closer to one another than they have been for the past 400 years. Known as the “great conjunction,” this bright planetary alignment will be easily visible just after sunset. ....
