Facebook China misinformation: Cash for propaganda


US social media giant Facebook has not only allowed state-run outlets like China Daily and CGTN to publish posts that dismiss these concerns as Western “disinformation” – it has accepted advertising payments to help promote this content to millions of people.
Presented with the findings of Press Gazette’s investigation, Imran Ahmed – chief executive of the Center for Countering Digital Hate – said it was “beyond disgusting that Facebook is taking money to promote Chinese state propaganda denying the reality that their state is engaged in crimes against humanity against Uyghur Muslims”.
In one case, by paying Facebook less than $400, China Daily was able to target more than one million users with a video that rubbishes independent press reports from Xinjiang. ....

Facebook 'is taking money from China to promote propaganda denying crimes against Uyghur Muslims'


Facebook is taking money from China to promote Communist propaganda which denies atrocities against the Uyghur Muslims, an investigation has revealed.
The Silicon Valley behemoth pocketed Beijing s cash to promote articles which downplayed what Washington has called a genocide in Xinjiang, according to The Press Gazette.  
China Daily and CGTN – the state-backed TV channel recently banned in the UK – have paid Mark Zuckerberg s firm just a few hundred dollars a time to promote posts to millions of users.
It comes as Facebook, worth £560 billion, was today accused of going to war with democracy as it banned Australians from sharing and accessing news on its website after Sydney threatened to force it to pay media companies for using their content. ....

Beijing criticized the removal of a tweet by its Chinese embassy in the U.S. that reported positive developments for women s rights in China s northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Our reporter Cui Hui ao has more.
The tweet was published on January 8th, claiming women in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were more confident and independent as they were no longer forced to have babies, which it says used to be the case under the influence of religious extremism. It added China s Xinjiang policy has emancipated their minds and improved gender equality. On January 9th, the tweet was deleted by Twitter on the grounds of dehumanizing and violating Twitter s rules. Today, China s Foreign Ministry responded to this incident.
