Jeffrey R. Staab/CBS via Getty Images Later this year CNN will finally air its original documentary series The Story of Late Night. It was supposed to air last spring but the pandemic and tumultuous months in U.S. politics pushed it back. It will examine the history of the late-night chat show genre, a uniquely American entertainment template. There is a lot of history and drama to cover but one aspect of the saga of late night needs to be highlighted in historical and contemporary terms – the maleness of it all. The recent mini-documentary Framing Britney Spears, which remains unavailable in Canada, has generated much hand-wringing about how Spears was treated when she had mental-health issues. By the media in general and by late-night TV. One element of that re-examination has been the resurfacing of an appearance by Lindsay Lohan on David Letterman’s show in 2013. (You can find it online easily.) Millions have now watched what is sickening viewing. Lohan, ....
Ever the professional late-night political comedian, Amber Ruffin started to unpack the ongoing (second) impeachment trial of a particular, disgraced former president on Friday. However, even a pro has limits, and the ordinarily indefatigable host just couldn’t get through yet another story rehashing the sordid details of a traitorous white supremacist and his passel of Republican accomplices, enablers, and assorted spineless nothings, blurting in frustration, “I don’t wanna talk about this! Who cares!” As is often the case in TV and movies since 1946, Ruffin then made a desperate, no doubt soon-to-be-ironically-punished wish, calling out to the heavens (or the 30 Rock rafters), “Trump isn’t the president any more and we shouldn’t have to keep thinking about him . . . I wish he had never been born!” ....
It’s Black History Month, wherein we as a nation belatedly celebrate the deliberately overlooked contributions of Black Americans, streaming services root through their libraries to create a temporary “celebrate Black excellence” sub-category, and, of course, snotty white people think they’re being super-clever by asking, “Oh yeah, well what would you say if we had a White History Month?!” Well, bring it on, said Amber Ruffin on Friday’s edition of The Amber Ruffin Show. In fact, bring on twelve of them, since, as she laid out with studiously funny efficiency, white Americans sure as hell aren’t learning much about their own history, and for the same reasons. ....
The failed white supremacist coup fills Amber Ruffin s heart with hilarious, sarcastic song Or, “songs.” With Peacock’s The Amber Ruffin Show blessedly back just in time for Donald Trump and Republican accomplices like Ted Cruz (R-TX), Josh Hawley (R-MO), Mo Brooks (R-AL), Jim Jordan (R-OH), Matt Gaetz (You Know Which Party-FL), the My Pillow guy (Unelected-Sleepytown), and more to foment, lead, and direct a murderous but unsuccessful white supremacist coup attempt against American democracy, the defiantly ebullient host just couldn’t help but sing about it all on Friday. Look, just because there’s an ongoing, conspiracy-and-ignorance-fueled mob of seditious, heavily armed yahoos throwing a collective and cop-killing tantrum because the single stupidest, most incompetent, and soullessly racist dipshit in U.S. history lost a second, world-dooming term in office is no reason to let the flickering flame of your patriotic inner song-stylist gutter out. That’s why ....
