Justice Joy Sengupta of Calcutta High Court today rejected the imposition of Section 144 in the entire Sandeshkhali. However, the court observed state has liberty to impose Section 144 in certain pockets after judicial review, people in the know said. Sandeshkhali has witnessed violent protests by women in the last one week and over allegations of atrocities on women and land grabbing by miscreants close to absconding Trinamool leader Shahjahan Sheikh.
A bench of justices Hrishikesh Roy and Prashant Kumar Mishra issued notice to the Delhi government seeking its response on the plea filed by Chandrakant Jha, who is serving life term after being convicted in three murder cases in which headless torsos were found outside Tihar jail here in 2006 and 2007. In his plea filed through advocate Rishi Malhotra, Jha said he has been convicted for the offences under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the Indian Penal Code.
