2International Livestock Research Institute, Dakar, Senegal The expected increase in livestock production to meet its increasing demand could lead to increased water depletion through feeds production. This study aimed at estimating the amount of water depletion through feeds and its corresponding productivity in livestock within the three dominant livestock management systems namely sedentary-intensive, sedentary-extensive, and transhumance in Yatenga and Seno provinces in the Sahelian zone of Burkina Faso. Using a participatory rapid appraisal and individual interview, beneficial animal products, and services were estimated, and consequently, livestock water productivity (LWP) as the ratio of livestock products and services to the amount of water depleted. Our results showed feed resources are mainly natural pasture and crop residues are common in all the management systems though the proportion of each feed type in the feed basket and seasonal preferences varied. Consequent ....
How Diversifying Public Procurement of Grains Can Resolve the Impasse Over MSP By shifting from rice and wheat crops, which get overemphasis both in terms of cultivation and procurement, to coarse grains such as bajra, maize can go a long way in correcting issues concerned with MSP. This, they argue, will increase volatility in farm incomes, and lead to rising indebtedness and a fall in living standards. Existing evidence and their own experience suggest that their worries are ampl ....
Open Letter From A Sardar Farmer To Free Market Champions Open Letter From A Sardar Farmer To Free Market Champions Dear FMCs (Free Market Champions) There are 5 reasons why I - a true Sardar farmer - believe you have not understood (through no fault of yours) the essence of agriculture and the life of a Punjab farmer. 1. Change the Cropping Pattern: Don t lecture us about producing less rice and wheat and switching to other crops - we have no secret emotional affinity to rice and wheat. For decades, we Sardar farmers have been craving a change in our cropping pattern. But the only honest way to ensure changes in cropping pattern is to provide MSPs (Minimum Support Price) for the other crops as well. India is producing too much wheat and rice - 50 million tonnes too much! On the other hand, a shortage causes a price rise of other crops - like onions and dal. To redress this imbalance, decide on MSPs levels based on what crops our country needs. Then watch a cro ....
