Details. reporter: 23-year-old tara hawkes is lucky to be alive after being attacked by a 6 6 crocodile. hawkes was swimming in shallow water in western australia sunday off the luxury yacht where she works as a steward. when those teeth suddenly chomped down on her leg, dragging her under the water. they put themselves in danger and they went into a place that was known crocodile habitat. and the main way to avoid a crocodile attack is not to go where crocodiles are. reporter: a fellow crew member named big al climbed on the croc s back. the ship s operator insists it s standard practice to scan for crocodiles. they told abc news crew members had checked this pool, too, but somehow they did not detect the crocodile. crocodiles for millions of years have been the masters of sneaking up. they can stay submerged and hidden and there s just it s so easy to miss. reporter: luckily for hawkes, ....
