Anti-Government Protests Roil Cuba as Pandemic Increases Hunger
(Bloomberg) Cuba appeared to block access to some social media sites on Monday while dozens of protesters remain in custody as authorities crackdown on dissent following the largest mass demonstrations in years.
The privately-run Internet monitoring firm NetBlocks said that social media and messaging sites such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Telegram were being partially disrupted on the tightly-controlled communist island.
Earlier in the day, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel blamed social media for fanning the flames of discontent that erupted into weekend protests. Facebook Inc. didn’t immediately reply to an email requesting comment. ....

“Those who fan these demonstrations don’t want the welfare of the people, but rather the privatization of health and education, and neo-liberalism,” state-controlled Prensa Latina cited President Miguel Diaz-Canel as saying. ....

(Bloomberg) Cuba will end its decades-old dual currency system and have a single unified exchange rate of 24 pesos per dollar from January, President Miguel Diaz-Canel said.
Streamlining the currency system will put the country on a sounder footing “to go ahead with the transformations that we need to update our economic and social model,” Diaz-Canel said in a televised speech on late Thursday, accompanied by former president Raul Castro.
The socialist economy has been hurt by the slump in tourism income since the pandemic began, and was already suffering under the U.S. embargo. The unification of the currencies is part of a wider reform package which the government has also said will also include modification of salaries, prices and subsidies. ....
