Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum wants to put a permanent property tax for public safety on the ballot in August 2022.
Bynum told city councilors Wednesday that’s his plan under a new state law allowing public safety districts, which cities can create to dedicate generally stable property tax revenue to their police and fire departments rather than just sales tax.
Bynum’s proposal is for five mills roughly $75 a year for a house worth $150,000 but City Finance Director James Wagner said the repayment period for upcoming bond issues could be extended so property tax bills don’t go up. ....

Local and federal authorities are investigating a bomb scare at U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe’s Tulsa offices.
There was a series of emails mentioning explosives along with Inhofe’s Tulsa and D.C. offices. The Robert W. Davis Tower near 21st Street and Utica Avenue was evacuated before noon Tuesday, and the Tulsa Police bomb squad searched the building, including Inhofe’s offices, with sniffer dogs for about half an hour.
No explosive devices were found.
TPD, the U.S. Capitol Police and the FBI are determining who sent the emails. ....

2 Killed When OHP Pursuit Ends With Crash In East Tulsa

An Oklahoma Highway Patrol chase Thursday afternoon ended in east Tulsa with two people dead.
OHP said troopers went on a high-speed chase of a pickup truck stolen from a car wash for about 15 minutes. The agency said the driver dodged stop sticks several times.
The driver of the pickup crashed into an SUV on 21st Street east of U.S. 169 about 1 p.m., killing two people inside. A third person was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
The street was closed for several hours Thursday afternoon as troopers investigated the crash.
The suspect was arrested. Authorities have not released names or ages of anyone involved. ....
