NEWS 4.9.21: NE Budget, C19 Updates, Wind Energy Increase, & No Overdue Book Fees

Nebraska lawmakers advanced a new, $9.7 billion state budget that includes more money for property tax credits and college scholarships while setting aside $115 million for a possible state prison to ease overcrowding.
The package would cover state expenses for the next two fiscal years, starting on July 1.
It came as some lawmakers warned about a possible economic downturn that hit state revenues, which are currently higher than expected despite the coronavirus pandemic.
The budget includes a $351 million boost to the state’s cash reserve, bringing it to a total of $763 million for emergencies and one-time expenses, a savings cushion equal to a little less than two months of state tax collections. ....

A big economic development from Ho-Chunk Capital today. The company finalized purchase of several businesses on historic Fourth Street in Sioux City from the Aalfs family. This includes the Aalfs main office building, Buffalo Alice, Antiques on Historic Fourth, M’s on 4th and SoHo.
Ho-Chunk plans to preserve and renovate several buildings and create new opportunities for commercial and residential tenants.
Ho-Chunk Capital is in charge of all investments for Ho-Chunk, Inc, the economic development corporation of the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska. Ho-Chunk, Inc. is an underwriter for Siouxland Public Media.

NEWS 12.18.20: Weekly SCCSD Update, NE C-19 Vaccines, IA Cases Down and More

The Sioux City Community School District released a weekly report on COVID-19 cases and for the first time also listed students and staff in quarantine.
This past week, the report showed four students and six staff members tested positive for the virus.
One multi-grade classroom at North Middle was put into Emergency Response Virtual Learning.
On Monday night, the Sioux City Community School board voted to require the district to release more detailed information about absences.  Some board members were concerned the district was under reporting the impact of COVID-19 in schools.
The report showed yesterday there were a total of 31 COVID-positive students with more than 500 in quarantine.  That is 3% of the student body.  There were more than 400 students out for other reasons.  There were 16 positive staff members reported yesterday with only seven in quarantine. ....
