Oscars 2021: Bay Area well represented at 93rd Academy Awards
A number of Bay Area nominees went home with an Oscar tonight.
Vallejo singer-songwriter H.E.R. won for Judas and the Black Messiah in the Best Original Song category with Fight for You.
Emeryville-based Pixar Animation Studios earned two Oscars for Soul which included Oakland native Daveed Diggs in its voice cast. The movie won in the Best Animated Film category and Best Original Score (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Jon Batiste). Soul was also up for Best Sound, which went to Sound of Metal.
Another Pixar film Burrow was nominated in the Short Animated Film category, but that award went to If Anything Happens I Love You.

It s all come down to this. The longest awards season is drawing to a close, after an excruciating pandemic year that nearly destroyed the movie business. History looks to be made at the Oscars, with women and people of colour getting recognition but there s also room for a surprise or two.

Netflix is presumed to be the leading studio with a predicted six wins, an increase from last year s tally of four. The good news is that the streaming giant has a 50/50 shot in four additional races, which could bring them to a double-digit tally, which would be a record in the modern era (Metro-Goldwyn Mayer dominated the 1930s and 1940s).

Some 70 women representing a record total of 76 overall nominations have been nominated for Oscars this year, a very encouraging statistic for the Academy and the industry.
In honor of this, Academy Museum trustee Diane von Furstenberg and the Academy Museum have released a video (click the link above to watch) celebrating the women nominees of the 93rd Oscars. In a year that posed exceptional challenges to filmmaking, it is especially important to uphold the tradition launched seven years ago to honor talented women filmmakers who continue to break glass ceilings in the entertainment industry.
