Terry and Kim Kovel King Features Syndicate St. Patrickâs Day is celebrated each year on March 17 in the United States, but collectors found few postcards, greeting cards or objects to collect before 1900. The first St. Patrickâs Day parade is said to have taken place in 1601 in St. Augustine, Florida. But a major event is the New York City parade, which started in 1762. St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Roman Britain and kidnapped in the late fourth century, when he was 14 years old. He was taken to Ireland as a slave, but he escaped in 431 A.D. and converted the Irish to Christianity. Parties, dances, drinking and celebrations started about 1600, and the observance has grown into an important celebration not only in Ireland but also in the U.S. ....
Terry and Kim Kovel King Features Syndicate Furniture made in America during its early days sometimes used expensive imported material such as mahogany with hardware from Europe. But local woods, such as pine, oak, walnut and cedar, iron and even paint were available and inexpensive. The use of a local wood helps identify furniture made in New Mexico, Louisiana and parts of Pennsylvania. An early 19th-century ladderback chair from Louisiana was sold at a recent Neal auction. It was made of cypress wood, which is rot-resistant, hard and durable, has few knots, a light golden color, and, best of all, found near the furniture maker. The chair could also be dated from the shape of the stiles, rungs and its corn husk seat. Modern copies of this type of chair to be used outdoors are made of cypress because it lasts longer than other woods. ....

By Terry and Kim Kovel King Features Syndicate The Arcade Manufacturing Company started as Novelty Iron Works in 1868. It made iron storefronts, windmills and coffee mills. It became Arcade Manufacturing Company in 1885, and the first product was a cork puller. In 1893, they started to make toys to make use of the scrap metal. Animal banks were made after 1908, and child-sized coffee grinders were made from the start until the 1930s. In 1921, the company decided to make toys that were copies of real vehicles and everyday items. The first of the toys was an accurate copy of the car used by Yellow Cab. By the 1930s, it was making copies of many other vehicles. The toys were well-made, expensive and popular with children. When World War II started in 1941, it switched to war work, making special iron parts. After the war in 1946, the company was bought. It closed in 1953. ....
Terry and Kim Kovel Scherenschnitte is a paper cutting art form. It was known to the ancient Chinese and others, and it became popular again in the early 1800s, especially in the Pennsylvania area. A group of the pictures were sold at folk art auctions in New England about 2011 to 2019. They often pictured a spread-wing eagle with lacy trim. Each was signed “G.B. French.” They were described as the work of an artist working in the early 1800s. Other folk art theorems and watercolors were part of his signed work. Most were mounted in frames about 15 inches by 22 inches with painted corner blocks. ....
