FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) Fresno County is home to over 140,000 senior citizens over the age of 65.
California s Public Health Department announced an expansion of the vaccine rollout which now makes seniors eligible to get their first COVID-19 shot.
Vaccinating the most vulnerable among us is the most important and efficient way of saving lives as fast as possible, says Sante s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Synn.
Sante physicians see over 17,000 seniors in the Valley. They ll soon receive letters informing them the vaccine is available.
Dr. Synn expects doses to arrive this week. ....

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) In an effort to get more COVID-19 doses out of the freezers and into patients, California Governor Gavin Newsom says it s all hands on deck.
State officials are expanding the list of people who can vaccinate, which will include dentists, pharmacists, and 15 National Guard strike teams.
Firefighters could be next.
Fresno City fire officials say there are ongoing discussions, but they would need additional training.
Fresno fire is a BLS, which is basic life support . We don t have paramedic certifications on our trucks. Our personnel would have to receive additional training. I don t think it d be tough to train our personnel, says Shane Brown with Fresno City Fire. ....

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) A lack of space and staff, along with a spike in cases has hospitals in Fresno County shifting to crisis mode, but with the worst yet to come.
Hospital workers are struggling to keep up with the number of COVID-19 patients coming in for care, and are bracing for more cases from holiday gatherings.
Fresno County Public Health Interim Director, Dr. Rais Vohra, said they re scrambling to find ways to lessen the impact.
One way they re hoping to free up beds is by obtaining oxygen concentrators, which would allow hospital officials to send patients home. ....

A half-million Pfizer shots have been distributed across the state so far, and now more than 670,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine are set to arrive soon.
Just days after getting the green light from the Food and Drug Administration, the vaccine is expected to arrive in Central California for distribution in the coming days.
This area is exploding with cases, ICU capacity in some areas is at zero so this is really timely to begin this process, to vaccinate and help end this pandemic, said Tim Calahan with Clinica Sierra Vista. ....
