25 May 2021 - Faculty Communications A new multi-country cohort study provides insight into the mortality rate of patients severely-ill with Covid-19 in Africa, and the prognosis is not good. The Covid-19 pandemic has challenged countries worldwide and has highlighted the flaws of many healthcare systems that are suddenly overburdened, particularly as countries are faced with peaking transmission rates. Africa currently has the highest death rate of adults who become critically ill after contracting Covid-19. Data from a multicentre cohort study published in The Lanceton 21 May 2021 indicate how a lack of intensive care facilities and critical resources has contributed to a continental Covid-19 mortality rate of 48%, almost 20% higher than the global average. ....

A formerly homeless man who volunteered to help other rough sleepers has received special recognition from the mayor. Andrew (Andy) White put in an astonishing 474 hours volunteering with the SPEAR homelessness group in the last year after they helped him during his time on the streets. In recognition of his efforts, Andy was one of those celebrated in the Kingston Mayor s Community Awards recently, receiving the Covid Award for outstanding service to the Royal Borough during the coronavirus pandemic . Formerly a successful builder, Andy was forced to flee a violent and abusive homelife and eventually ended up on the streets when sofa surfing with his friends became untenable. ....

A total of 113 individuals and teams – in both clinical and non-clinical roles – as well as volunteers, carers and service users are up for honours in the Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust You’re A Star Awards. The number of nominations – which have been submitted from across Bradford, Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven – is more than 60 per cent up on last year. They include a pilot scheme to improve support for people experiencing a mental health crisis; a clinic’s use of ‘foot selfies’ to help triage patients with diabetic foot ulcers; volunteer marshals at a Covid-19 testing site; a district nursing team which provides vital out-of-hours care; a ‘young involvement partner’ who helps the trust recruit staff; a home-visiting team which has been supporting vulnerable patients, families and carers throughout the pandemic, and carer ....
