(Credit: NYT) NEW DELHI: India on Wednesday reported a record rise in Covid-19 deaths over the last 24 hours, taking its total fatalities past the 200,000 mark and the total tally of cases to over 1.8 crore. With 3,293 new deaths, India s total number of fatalities now stands at 201,187, according to the Union health ministry data updated at 10 am today. In the biggest daily spike since the outbreak of Covid, India also recorded over 3.6 lakh new infections in the last 24 hours. India breached the 3,000 mark in daily deaths a day before on Tuesday, for the first time since the pandemic started in 2019.

Covid-19 India saw a single-day spike of 3,32,730 (3.32 lakh) Covid-19 infections and 2,263 deaths on Friday. The active cases now stand at 24,28,616 (24.28 lakh). Top government officials acknowledged that India could be approaching the second high of the Covid-19 pandemic, they also added that tier 2 and 3 cities are the worst hit this time. The number of coronavirus cases has increased by 150% or more in 70 districts across 16 states in the last two weeks. India Covid-19 Cases: India saw the deadliest day of pandemic with 1,501 deaths. New Delhi: India saw the deadliest day of the pandemic as 1,501 deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours. The country also recorded the biggest daily surge in cases with 2,61,500 infections, taking the caseload to 1.47 crore total cases. This is the fourth straight day when over 2 lakh cases have been recorded. Over 12 lakh cases have been added to the caseload in the last one week.  Maharashtra (67,123), Uttar Pradesh (27,734), Delhi  (24,375), Karnataka (17,489), and Chhattisgarh (16,083) are the five states that recorded the highest number of cases since yesterday.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a high-level review meet to review the Covid situation.
