Paul Pigat grabs his Gretsch and hops on Cousin Harley to ride out the pandemic in a blaze of wild rockabilly

When COVID-19 killed concerts last year, professional musicians who relied heavily on revenue from live shows were put in financial peril. That fact wasn t lost on Vancouver guitar ace Paul Pigat, who normally chocks up plenty of gigs with his bands Cousin Harley, Boxcar Campfire, and the Paul Pigat Trio.
There s easier ways to make a living than being a musician, says Pigat on the line from Murfitt Guitars in East Van, and this has made it a lot harder. But honestly I m doin alright, because I ve been productive. I put out the Cousin Harley record, and I m workin on a record with Kevin Breit he s my favourite guitar player in the world, pretty much. And my pastime is building guitars, so I ve built a boatload of guitars. And then I teach as well; I ve been teaching since I was 18. So that s been able to keep me above water. ....

Elmore Magazine‘s pages, dating back to
Boxcar Campfire in 2011 (the print days), and as recently as 2018’s
Blue Smoke (from Iain Patience). This writer covered a Canadian collective with Pigat, Blue Moon Marquee, in July of 2019. All told,
Let’s Go! is Cousin Harley’s seventh release, and it’s fair to say this latest outing is a mashup of Johnny Cash in rockabilly mode, the bluesy side of the Blasters, and the infectious rockabilly of the Stray Cats. In other words, this is the hard-rocking side of the immensely talented, versatile Paul Pigat. In the liner notes he describes the sound as “a raunchy, low brow fusion of Hillbilly, Blues and Country music with a little touch of Punky exuberance.” The other trio members are Keith Picot (double bass) and Jesse Cahill (drums). ....

Prince George Free Press » Promoter learning as he goes

Ever wonder how the great music that reaches the stage in venues around Prince George gets there in the first place? Promoters work hard to bring the best entertainment they can to our northern city.
Earl Kruselnicki and his wife Nanci with Za Zoot Entertainment may be the new kids on the block when it comes to promoting local and out of town talent but they catch on fast. They had to.
“About five years ago Nancie said if I was thinking about retirement, I’d better start a hobby so I had something to do with my free time,” said Kruselnicki. ....

The Year in Review, 2020: the year without concert reviews

Looking back on 2020, the year of COVID-19, the worst thing about it was obviously the loss of life. While I m writing this the worldwide death toll is 1,663,097. While you re reading it it s undoubtedly much, much higher. Don t bother checking. It s too depressing.
Then there s the whole economic catastrophe that the pandemic has caused. Billions and billions of dollars lost. Maybe trillions. Countless businesses destroyed and jobs lost. All in all, not a lotta fun on the financial front.
Somehow, though, by the grace of god or whoever s in charge, the lucky among us survived. I managed to avoid contracting the disease, and whether having that catchy old Bee Gees tune Stayin Alive stuck in my head 24/7 helped or not, who s to know. ....
