Courtney Wilton’s opinion piece “The public should decide replacement for Harvey Scott statue” (March 3) perfectly mirrors the drama taking place on this little pedestal in the park we love and walk in. Wilton’s approach reflects his privilege, including a lot of great public service according to the summary of his background.
As someone who shares this privilege, I initially agreed with the headline but quickly prickled at the approach. Wilton starts by characterizing the removal of Harvey Scott’s statue as “abhorrent and unfair.” From another perspective (mine), the unceremonious removal reflects the rage that Black, Indigenous, people of color and women feel at having public spaces sentried by images of white patriarchal colonizers. Rage is not fair. That is not its purpose. Wilton finds the process by which the York statue was installed “appalling,” but is it not just the expres ....

I’ve lived in the Mount Tabor neighborhood in Southeast Portland for more than 30 years and have been fortunate to visit my local park almost daily. I know the statue of Harvey Scott at the top of the hill well and have watched its recent demise ­– and replacement – with interest.
