The event is named after the late John Anderton, a former head of the Northern Michigan University Department of Earth, Environmental and Geological Sciences. He passed away in March 2014. One of the many organizers of the multitude of events to be held in-person, outdoors and virtually is John O’Bryan, who is finishing what he called an “individually created degree” in climate advocacy at NMU. O’Bryan has been an intern with the NMU Sustainability Advisory Council, but his involvement with Earth Week is part of an independent capstone course of climate advocacy with Professor Josh Ewalt in the communications department. ....

Savion Energy is proposing a 150-megawatt project called Cass County Solar LLC that will cover roughly 1,500 acres or less of farmland near Edgehill Road. The project has a life expectancy of 30 years and would create from two to five permanent jobs. Courtney Timmons, development director for Savion, said the project still is moving forward. “The project is now in the commercial marketing phase of development and continues to move as expected through the development schedule,” Timmons said. ....

[email protected] SANDS TOWNSHIP After a unanimous vote by the Sands Township Planning Commission on Tuesday night, a 1,500-acre solar farm in the township is ready to move forward. The planning commission voted to approve a special-use permit for the Superior Solar Project, which will be located on Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. property southwest of the intersection of Marquette County Road 480 and M-553. The project, headed by Savion, LLC, of Kansas City, Missouri, is expected to produce 149.7 megawatts of power, serving the Midcontinent Independent System Operator power grid into the Dead River-Arnold 345 kilovolt line. The solar farm is expected to be capable of powering around 35,000 homes. ....
