St. Landry Real Estate Journal had a short run | Parlons Opelousas
While doing research for a book I am trying to complete, I ran across some new information regarding the newspaper history of Opelousas.
As I’ve shared in a number of other Parlons articles, Opelousas is known as the Graveyard of Newspapers since so many papers opened and closed in our town over the decades. Well, last week I discovered another paper buried in that graveyard.
Let’s talk about that.
In April of 1881, when the Louisiana Press Association sent out an announcement with a list of all newspapers in Louisiana, three of those papers were located in Opelousas the Opelousas Courier started in 1852, the St. Landry Democrat started in 1878 and the St. Landry Real Estate Journal started in 1879. From this announcement, it seems Opelousas once had a newspaper called the St. Landry Real Estate Journal. According to reports, a 50-year-old man's body was recovered from the Old Courtableau waterway on January 18, 2021. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries are continuing their investigation, but they do understand that this incident developed after the man's kayak capsized.
