It’s Friday, June 11. A warming trend is set to continue this weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Excessive heat warnings will be in effect beginning Saturday and Sunday for communities including Prescott and Grand Canyon Village. Forecasters say temperatures could surpass 110º next week in lower elevation regions of Yavapai County.
 
‘Progress’ On Slate Fire Near Flagstaff, Forest Officials Say
Crews are still working to contain a fire 23 miles northwest of Flagstaff. The Slate Fire has grown to about 5,000 acres according to the Coconino National Forest. No containment has been reported per the Bureau of Land Management; a stretch of Route 180 remains closed.  ....

Communities, Advocates Commemorate Missing And Murdered Indigenous People
Advocacy groups and community members gathered across the state and country Wednesday to commemorate Missing and Murdered Indigenous People and to call for preventative action.
“With increased funding, resources, and partnerships, we will be better equipped to enforce laws and deter crimes committed against our Indigenous mothers, sisters, daughters, and LGBTQ community, said Navajo Nation First Lady Phefelia Nez.
At a panel hosted by Missing and Murdered Diné Relatives, community members shared their stories and discussed the case of Jamie Yazzie, a 33-year-old nursing assistant who was last seen on June, 2019 in Pinon, Arizona. The FBI is seeking information related to Yazzie and last month offered a $5,000 reward.  ....

While the global health pandemic, COVID-19, continues to make headlines in the new year after it emerged in the area in March 2020, Weakley County saw its share of good news, as well as losses for the final six months of the year.
The local, state and federal elections saw new faces as local governments welcomed candidates making history in their cities. The county mourned the passing of agricultural advocate Terry Oliver. Mask mandates were issued in Weakley County last year as businesses, schools and families continue to be impacted by the novel coronavirus. ....

Nevada Surpasses 250,000 COVID-19 Cases
Nevada hit a milestone in the pandemic. The state surpassed a quarter of a million COVID-19 cases since March. The state’s death toll is more than 3,500. 
Statewide, there have been an average of over 1,800 new daily cases over the last two weeks. There are over 1,800 people hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 and 80% of staffed hospital beds are occupied, according to the Nevada Hospital Association.
And deaths continue to climb. In Washoe, 10% of the 544 COVID-19-related deaths in the county have been reported this month.
