× × Karl Rose and Darren Young are looking forward to managing teams in competitive football again over the next two months while also hoping their former club Barnsley FC can better the 1999/2000 play-off final campaign when they were both on the books at Oakwell. Sportsclubs have been able to train and play since Monday and, although most leagues are not starting until later in the month, the County Senior League is due to begin today with two cups. The Barnsley teams include Wombwell Town and Dodworth MW, whose respective managers Rose and Young were Barnsley reserve players during the 1999/2000 season in which the Reds lost at Wembley to Ipswich Town in the Division One play-off final. ....
× Darren Young was one of a number of young New Zealand footballers brought to Barnsley FC 22 years ago and, although he never made an appearance for the Reds, he still lives in the town and is manager of Dodworth Miners Welfare FC. Born in Whitehaven in Cumbria before his family emigrated to New Zealand when he was 11, Young was one of a number of Kiwi talents signed for the Reds by Colin Walker including Rory Fallon, Leo Bertos and Dave Mulligan, who all played for Barnsley’s first team and internationally for the All Whites. Young, who represented his country at under 20s level and spent the majority of his career in Ireland, looks back fondly on his time at Oakwell. ....
× Barnsley s top non-league clubs have mixed feelings over how and whether to complete the 2020/21 season after it was suspended again. All non-elite sport has been shut down during the new national lockdown which is due to be reviewed next month but is expected by many to last until at least March. Northern Counties East League games had already been suspended until January 13, as most of their clubs were in tier four areas under the government’s measures. It is the second time this season that games have been suspended after there was no play from early November to mid-December. The start of the season was also delayed until September with clubs so far playing between six and 13 of their 38 matches. ....
