Profane anti-Biden flags raise hackles

Nick Lemme, a Silver City resident, raises a controversial flag containing profane language in his front yard last week. He began flying the flag shortly after the election of President Joe Biden, and has faced backlash and some support from the community as a result of the strong language used on the flag.
Several Silver City and Grant County residents raised concerns after two private residences one on Swan Street in Silver City and one in Arenas Valley began flying flags that use profane language, drawing questions as to whether public displays of profanity are protected under the First Amendment. ....

Grant County commissioners on Thursday weighed in on a controversial piece of legislation making its way through the Roundhouse in Santa Fe: the N.M. Civil Rights Act.
Over the course of a three-hour meeting, commissioners approved several resolutions authorizing Colonias infrastructure grant applications for a preliminary engineering report for Silver Acres and two road projects, one in Arenas Valley and the other in North Hurley.
They also approved an agreement that ensures the county’s continued participation in the DWI prevention program, as well as a services agreement with the Center for Health Innovation, which operates a career training program intended to motivate primary health care providers to practice in rural Grant County. ....

The Grant County Administration Building will be closed to staff and the public today due to an outbreak of coronavirus infections among workers.
A spokesperson said the building will reopen for business Thursday, Feb. 4, at 8 a.m. after undergoing a deep cleaning and sanitization, but will remain closed to the public except for visits by appointment in certain departments.
Grant County Manager Charlene Webb told the Daily Press that four employees reported receiving positive coronavirus test results Tuesday, resulting in the closure of the entire building, with the exception of the sheriff’s office. ....
