Contact tracing program brought mixed results


State and local health leaders say that over the past year they had some success with contact tracing — the process of notifying people who came in close contact with a positive COVID-19 case — but acknowledge that trouble with remote training, changing protocols and understaffing during surges of the disease hobbled the program.
San Mateo County public health leaders say while the winter surge of COVID-19 cases stretched their contact tracing capacity, the $19 million effort to find those exposed to the disease led to some success in stopping the spread of COVID-19. 
According to County Health Deputy Chief Srija Srinivasan, the county ramped up its contact tracing program in the summer of 2020 while also building resources for those infected with the disease to make sure they had meals, a safe place to isolate and wages for missed work.
