Countdown is trialling new customer self-service technology in Cambridge. The hope is to expand the automated units to supermarkets nationwide as more people shop online. Mark Wolfenden, acting general manager of CountdownX, the supermarket’s digital arm, said the units were part of a broader strategy to improve the speed and convenience of grocery pick-up. “Ultimately we are aiming to respond to how customers are shopping and to break down some of the friction in the process at the moment.” Countdown was beginning with the two stores to assess how customers responded to the service, he said.
