With me, one of the councilmen. thank you for being here. tell me about how other communities are i was mentioning the 50,000 pounds of food given out by food banks in various communities here. folks and especially in west baltimore, councilman mosby, senator pugh, have done a great job of coordinating with folks. we appreciate that. that s a need as well because people need food. they need medicines, they have to be transported to get medicines. this is truly a crisis incident for some neighborhoods in the city. monday, you have your first council meeting since this past monday. what are the two things that you re going to ask for? well, monday, we continue this conversation, and for me, actually before this, last monday, i introduced a bill that s going to have a hearing for us around our police vans and whether we need to put cameras in the vans, whether we should privatize the vans. those are the conversations we re going to have because this is not just a quick fix. ....

Yes, the president should be mindful. but i have not heard anybody ask where s the speaker of the house on this? congress needs to be involved. it s not just the black caucus, it s congress so who is the speaker of the house worried about you? you or the tea party? he s worried about the guys that play hard ball. he doesn t worry about what s happening in baltimore and philadelphia and los angeles his party doesn t represent those cities. that s why we have to figure out how to leverage this. michael, how do you leverage this? i agree, the attitude has to change but we re living in a time it isn t going to change. the power s going to change. that s where it is. the power is in how those constituencies leverage this opportunity, how the black community aligns itself in such a way that it leverages not just the speaker boehners of the world but the mayor nutters and the city councilmen. nobody works harder than ....

A way that it leverages not just the speaker boehners of the world but the mayor nutters and the city councilmen. nobody works harder than nutter. i wish there was a way to make this work. we re going to talk about this a little later than just the latest street protests. we ought to be doing this professionally and pushing it forward. i hate to give sermons. we ll be right back after this. ....

Councilmen this is my point about it being a tall order. precisely what happens is that our capacity to hold those people accountable is closer to us because they re more proximate, but the problems the institutional structure has to be higher. my concern about the conversation is saying there s nothing we can do because there s always some terrible force. no. we can work to change the congress, but if you look at the ferguson report the way that they ve criminalized poor people to the extent where they get trapped in thesis stems of being late for a fine and then it increases these are decisions local folks can make. i have never sat here and said the amount of time i spend away from my family and children trying to make a difference i m offended by saying we can never make a difference. ....

The mayor represents. that s public safety and city at odds i think is inappropriate to do so. i think we expect more from our unions that had police organizations. and say that the mayor has blood on his hands is inaccurate. the blood is on the hands of the sick person that carried out the sick act. it s on the hands of those who continue the operation of guns in our communities. this is a conversation that has been part of this agenda for years. and the peaceful protests we re talking about real reform. they re not talking about police harm or retribution. they ve done it in a peaceful manner here in new york and the american experience. let me get you to hang on. i want to bring in new york city councilmen germane williams who represents part of brooklyn. thank you so much for joining us. let me get your reaction to the ....
