A plan to make Santa Cruz carbon neutral by 2035 was adopted by the Santa Cruz City Council on Tuesday. The plan follows a state mandate to reduce carbon emissions by at least 40% by 2030 compared with 1990 levels, and it includes a goal to phase out the use of natural gas in homes. It also promotes denser housing near transit, electric-vehicle adoption and more infrastructure for walking, cycling and electric transportation.
After much rancor this fall regarding an oversized vehicle ordinance, the Santa Cruz City Council passed the measure by a vote of 5-2 on Nov. 9. The earliest it could have gone into effect was Dec. 9, but legally it can't begin until a number of provisions are put in place. Lookout checks on when that might happen.
