A Berkeley Activist's Diary, week ending July 17. Category: Public Comment from The Berkeley Daily Planet

Monday July 19, 2021 - 06:36:00 PM
This feels like a week to pour a glass of wine, pick up a mindless book and eat chocolate. That is as long as there is water left to grow the grapes and the crop doesn’t cook in a heat dome and the tiny chocolate midge insects survive to pollinate the cocoa plant. The drought map https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/ looks worse each week and unless we can learn to appreciate the critical importance of insects and their host plants a lot more is at risk than just chocolate. Summer has barely started. The West is burning and so is Siberia. The flood waters in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium are starting to recede and we are supposed to be on watch for lightening. As for mindless books, there is no shortage, but I can’t seem to pull my head out of the books on politics and the environment. ....

AN ACTIVIST'S DIARY, br Week Ending May 1. Category: Public Comment from The Berkeley Daily Planet

AN ACTIVIST S DIARY,
Saturday May 01, 2021 - 11:26:00 AM
Where I grew up, May 1 was a celebration of spring with leaving surprise baskets of candy on doorsteps and then running away. I didn’t learn about May 1 as International Worker’s Day until years later after I left that little town in Minnesota. May 1 is also the birthday of a friend who caught COVID-19 in January 2021 and is still struggling with what we call “long haulers syndrome.” An attendant for her daughter went partying over New Years and brought it in.
I am sharing the story of my friend as the COVID-19 pandemic is not over even as the incidence of new cases in the US is dropping and California is looking good. For some like my friend COVID may never be over. Please do all you can to persuade unvaccinated 16 year olds and older in your circle of friends to get their COVID-19 vaccines and complete the two shot regi ....

Berkeley doesn't need to change law to landmark Kamala Harris's home

Update, March 9, 5 p.m.: City Councilmember Kate Harrison will pull her proposed resolution to “change” Berkeley law to enable the landmarking of Kamala Harris’ childhood home.
After more discussion with staff, Harrison said she has more clarity about the circumstances in which a person’s home can be considered for landmark status. She had based her resolution on a reading of a recent staff report concerning landmarking 1915 Berryman St., the former home of William Payson. The staff report recommended denying the landmarking of Payson’s former home, in part, because he was not living in the house when he helped found Berkeley’s First Unitarian Church, the act he is best known for. Harrison said she was concerned that staff analysis would impose impediments on landmarking Harris’ house because she was only a child when she lived there an ....
