A proposal by two Hartford City Council members for a study on the feasibility of a city-owned, city-operated grocery store in the North End food desert was heartily discouraged by a top city official in a recent presentation.
The Hartford City Council is set to consider a resolution to study the feasibility of constructing a city-owned, full-service grocery store in the North End.
The area currently lacks a grocery store within 1 mile, making it a food desert, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The resolution, introduced by Councilman Joshua Michtom and Councilwoman Tiana Hercules, is on the agenda for the council’s Oct. 11 meeting.
New positions in the city department that responds to housing problems may allow Hartford to take a more proactive approach to holding landlords accountable, one that doesn’t rely as heavily on complaints from tenants.
