Memorial garden bench honour for veteran Newtownabbey councillor
A bespoke bench has been unveiled at Campbell Memorial Garden in the ground of Mossley Mill in honour of long-serving Alderman Dr Fraser Agnew MBE.

The Ulster Unionist representative was first elected to former Newtownabbey Borough Council in 1980, where he served as mayor in 1990/91 and again in 2013/14. He also served as deputy mayor in both 1989/90 and 2012/13.
The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery, who joined Ald Agnew in unveiling the bench, said: “It is a privilege to be here today and mark this momentous milestone. Fraser has faithfully served this borough for more than 40 years and I am delighted that we have been able to acknowledge his commitment to public service. ....

Mayor Cllr Jim Montgomery marks National Day of Reflection
A memorial to those in Antrim and Newtownabbey who have lost their lives to Covid is to be created in the borough.
Councillors decided at a meeting on Monday evening that a tree will be planted at Antrim Civic Centre and Mossley Mill, in Newtownabbey and flowerbeds are to be planted in Whiteabbey and Antrim in their memory.
The recommendation was proposed by Ulster Unionist Councillor Robert Foster who said: “I am delighted we are going to see this in our borough.” ....

Mary Johnston turned 100 years old on January 11, celebrating with her direct family at home, while close relatives elsewhere, including the United States, joined via Zoom due to COVID precautions and travel restrictions.
Born January 11, 1921 in Killucan, Ireland as the oldest of six children, Mary was raised and schooled in Armagh while living with her uncle. As an adult, she went to Belfast City Hospital to train for nursing in the late 1930’s. She then qualified for midwifery in Glasgow in the years following.
She returned to Belfast to become a senior nurse, overseeing the midwife’s unit. In August 1949, she married Norman Johnston and moved to Whiteabbey where she continues to live to this day. Three years later, she had her first child, Valerie, followed two years later by her second child, Len. ....
