Aberdeen teachers union raises concerns over return to school announcement

Aberdeen teachers union raises concerns over return to school announcement Updated: 17/02/2021, 5:12 pm A teachers union has called for a rethink on back to school plans after the First Minister announced a phased return for pupils next week. Concerns have been raised by the Aberdeen branch of EIS over the move, which will see early learning and younger primary school children going back full-time from Monday. Senior pupils who need to attend practical classes for exam purposes will also be allowed back to the classroom. Aberdeen City branch secretary Ron Constable said: “Our primary school members for P1-P3 as well as our secondary school members will have concerns around their safety, particularly as there are now these more transmittable variants when the previous variant was already highly transmissible.

North-east education leaders praise 'outstanding commitment to home learning'

North-east education leaders have praised staff and young people for their commitment to home learning. As the coronavirus lockdown has meant that the only young people currently working in schools are those who are vulnerable or the children of key workers, thousands of pupils across the region have had to adapt to home working again. The hard worth of both staff and youngsters has been praised by teachers and other education chiefs, as classes and projects are instead carried out at home. © Aberdeenshire Council S1 pupil at Westhill Academy Lewis doing some cooking. At Westhill Academy, a recent survey carried out with parents and carers said that 98% agreed school communications regarding home learning have been helpful, and 79% agreed the amount of work allocated to their child was about right and 99% said they had regular contact with teachers.
